Joe's pick – What I love: This speaker is great to throw in a bag and take anywhere. It's bluetooth, so easy to set up. Long battery life, and because it's a Sonos, you already know the sound is gorgeous.
Hear us mention the Sonos Roam 2 and Joe's use of it on trips during our SA01 episode on Scotland here.
Beyond that, though, this speaker is great around the house as well. I have the Sonos sound system, and it's great that I can use the Roam to fill in “holes” in the sound. For example, I'll play a couple of speakers during board game nights with friends, but I can also sit this small speaker at the end of the table to round out the sound.
What I don't love: The Sonos app upgrade implementation has gone notoriously bad. While the app should be easy to use, the responsiveness isn't always what it should be. While I love the ability to adjust speakers individually and switch speakers, sometimes there's a lag. Sonos knows this is an issue, and because you're paying for great sound and easy use, they're hard at work fixing the issue (I received an email from the CEO…so you know they're aware and are on it).

Crystal’s Pick – What I Love:
This portable WiFi hotspot was an absolute lifesaver during my trip. It ensured I had internet access at every moment, no matter where I was—whether navigating through the bustling streets of Tokyo, figuring out complex bus and train schedules, or hailing cabs with ease. One of the biggest perks was being able to upload pictures to my social media accounts on the go and, of course, staying connected with my mom back home. The convenience of having reliable WiFi also meant I could avoid the often steep international data charges that can sneak up on you when traveling abroad. I’ve used this device on multiple international trips now, and it consistently proves its worth, making it an essential piece of my travel kit.
You can hear us discuss the Portable WiFi Hotspot and how I’ve relied on it during my travels during our SA02 episode with Lee Huffman here.
What I Don’t Love:
While this device is incredibly handy, it does come with a few minor inconveniences. I had to remember to charge it daily, which meant one more thing on my to-do list during the trip. Carrying an extra charging cord was also necessary, which took up a bit of extra space in my travel bag. Speaking of space, the hotspot isn’t exactly tiny, so I had to make sure I was either wearing something with pockets or carefully packing it into my small travel crossbody bag, along with essentials like my wallet, cellphone, and hand sanitizer. Despite these small drawbacks, the benefits of having reliable WiFi wherever I go far outweigh the minor hassles.

Joe’s Pick – What I Love:
These pants are an absolute must-have for any adventure—whether you’re trekking through rugged terrain or strolling through a new city. The ultra-stretch fabric makes them incredibly comfortable for all-day wear, and the slim-fit design means they look stylish no matter where your travels take you. I love how versatile these pants are; they’re durable enough for hiking but casual enough to wear to dinner afterward. Plus, they’re weatherproof, which is perfect for unpredictable conditions. No more worrying about getting caught in a sudden rainstorm! The fabric is quick-drying and moisture-wicking, keeping me comfortable even when the weather decides to act up.
You can hear us chat about how I’ve worn these on different adventures in our SA03 episode about packing here.
What I Don’t Love:
While these pants are fantastic in most situations, they can feel a bit snug after a long day of travel. The slim fit is great for style, but if you’re someone who likes a bit more room for movement, you might want to consider sizing up. Another small downside is that, while they’re weatherproof, they’re not fully waterproof—so in heavy rain, they might not keep you completely dry. Despite that, their durability, comfort, and style make them one of my go-to travel essentials.
Crystal’s Pick – What I Love:
Compression packing cubes take my travel organization to the next level. Not only do they keep my items neatly organized like regular packing cubes, but they also have the added bonus of compressing my clothes to save even more space in my luggage. I can pack way more than I normally would, which is a huge advantage on longer trips or when I’m trying to avoid checking a bag. These cubes allow me to flatten down bulky items like sweaters or jackets, making it easier to fit everything into a carry-on. Plus, I love that everything stays wrinkle-free and in place, even after a long flight or bumpy ride. I also use a set at home to organize my exercise clothes, socks, undies and swimwear. They’re an absolute game-changer!
You can hear us talk about compression packing cubes and how they’ve transformed my travel packing process in our episode all about Exploring Japan: Tokyo, Kyoto, and Mount Fuji (SA004).
What I Don’t Love:
While compression packing cubes are a lifesaver for saving space, there’s a bit of a trade-off. If you overstuff them, they can get quite bulky, making it difficult to zip them up. You also need to be mindful of TSA or customs checks—if they decide to open your bag and one of your compression cubes gets unzipped, all the carefully packed clothes could expand and take up much more room, which could be a bit of a hassle. On the bright side, like with regular packing cubes, if they only open one cube, the rest of your stuff stays neatly packed and organized. Despite the occasional struggle to zip them up or the risk of them being opened, the amount of space I save makes them totally worth it for me.

Joe’s Pick – What I Love:
Looking for a fun and easy-to-learn card game to take along on your travels? Don’t L.L.A.M.A. is a perfect pick! This award-nominated, llama-themed game is great for the whole family and provides hours of entertainment whether you’re on a plane, at the hotel, or just relaxing in the evening after a long day of exploring. The rules are simple but strategic enough to keep everyone engaged. It’s all about discarding your cards to avoid points, and, trust me, things can get competitive fast! Plus, the compact size makes it super portable—it fits right into your carry-on or day bag. It’s a travel-friendly, laugh-out-loud way to pass the time.
What I Don’t Love:
While the game is quick and fun, if you’re playing with the same group over and over, it can start to feel a bit repetitive after a few rounds. Also, it’s mainly a game for 2-6 players, so if you have a larger group, it might not be the best fit. But overall, its portability, ease of play, and lighthearted competition make it a great addition to your travel game collection.

Crystal’s Pick – What I Love:
This water bottle carrier is the ultimate travel companion for staying hydrated on the go! Whether you’re wandering through a new city, hiking in the mountains, or just exploring your local neighborhood, this insulated neoprene water bottle pouch keeps your drink cold and easily accessible. The adjustable shoulder strap makes it comfortable to wear as a crossbody, leaving your hands free to take photos, check maps, or handle other travel essentials. I love how convenient it is—you don’t have to dig through your bag to find your water bottle, and it saves space inside your backpack for other gear. Plus, the neoprene material helps maintain the temperature of your drink, keeping it cool even on a hot day.
You can hear us talk about how this handy accessory keeps me hydrated and ready for adventure in our Scotland: You Weigh In With MORE Great Tips (SA006) Episode.
What I Don’t Love:
One minor downside is that the strap can get twisted or tangled if you’re in a rush, and it does add a bit of bulk to your overall travel look, which might not be ideal for minimalist packers. It’s also another thing to keep track of if you’re going through airport security or TSA checkpoints. But honestly, the convenience of having your water bottle right at your side and always accessible outweighs these small inconveniences. It’s a must-have for anyone who likes to stay hydrated without the hassle!

Joe’s Pick – What I Love:
When it comes to comfort and practicality on the road, wool socks are an absolute game-changer. Not only are they incredibly cozy, but they also have arch support that gives tired feet a much-needed boost after a long day of exploring. Nothing quite revives your feet like slipping into a fresh pair, and the support makes a noticeable difference in reducing foot fatigue. Plus, wool socks are naturally weather-resistant—they keep my feet warm when it’s cold and comfortable when it’s warm. Even if you step in a puddle or face unpredictable weather, they still manage to keep your feet dry. They’re my go-to for any kind of trip, whether it’s hiking or city walking.
You can hear us talk about the benefits of wool socks and how they’ve helped me travel comfortably in our YOUR Travel and Packing Hacks (SA007) Episode.
What I Don’t Love:
One small drawback is that wool socks can sometimes be a bit thicker, so they can take up a little more space in your luggage compared to regular socks. They also tend to be pricier, but the durability and comfort they provide make them worth every penny. Overall, they’re a travel essential for anyone who values comfort, support, and all-weather reliability for their feet.

Crystal’s Pick – What I Love:
Travel bottles and containers are a must-have for any frequent traveler! These compact, refillable containers allow you to bring your favorite toiletries in TSA-approved sizes, so you can stay fresh and comfortable on the go without the hassle of bulky, full-size bottles. They’re leak-proof and durable, meaning no mid-flight spills or messy surprises in your luggage. I love the convenience of being able to take exactly what I need, especially for products that aren’t always easy to find in travel sizes. Plus, many of these containers are eco-friendly and reusable, which makes them a smart choice for both your wallet and the environment.
You can hear us discuss the advantages of using travel bottles and how they help streamline packing in our Our Favorite Ghost Tours (SA008) Episode.
What I Don’t Love:
The only downside is that some travel bottles can be tricky to clean, especially with thicker products like lotion or sunscreen, so it’s best to look for ones with a wide opening. Also, depending on your trip length, you might find yourself needing to refill more often than you’d like. But overall, these containers make traveling lighter, more organized, and a bit greener—definitely worth it for any traveler!

Team Pick – What We Love:
Today’s pick is Hauntingly Good Spirits: New Orleans Cocktails to Die For by Christi and Sharon Sumich—a delightful book that blends cocktail recipes with the rich, storied history of New Orleans. This book is more than a cocktail recipe collection; it’s an exploration of the city's mysterious past, with each drink inspired by a local tale or iconic figure. We had the pleasure of interviewing the authors for today’s episode, and it was such a fun conversation! Their passion for New Orleans shines through, bringing to life its haunted history and unique spirit (both literally and figuratively!). From classic drinks with a twist to lesser-known concoctions, this book is perfect for both cocktail lovers and anyone who appreciates the magic and mystery of New Orleans.
You can hear us dive into the stories and drinks from Hauntingly Good Spirits in our Sip Your Way Through New Orleans: A Toast to History and Mystery (SA009) episode here.
What We Didn’t Love:
While this book is a treat for fans of New Orleans culture and cocktails, it might make you long for a trip to the Big Easy sooner than expected! (I was SO sad I wasn't instantly transported to NOLA) Also, some of the ingredients may be harder to find, but the Sumich sisters provide great suggestions for substitutions, keeping it accessible for any home bartender. Overall, this book is a delight, blending history, mystery, and a whole lot of flavor.

Joe’s Pick – What I Love:
The Away Bag is my go-to travel luggage, combining sleek design with practical features that make traveling so much easier. One of the standout features is the built-in, removable battery for charging your phone or devices on the go—a lifesaver when you’re stuck at the airport or exploring a new city. The hard shell is durable yet lightweight, protecting everything inside without adding unnecessary weight. Inside, there are perfectly designed compartments, including a compression system that helps maximize space (a game-changer for over-packers like me!). The smooth, 360° spinner wheels make it a breeze to navigate busy airports or cobblestone streets. It’s stylish, functional, and built to withstand all kinds of travel adventures.
You can hear us talk about The Away Bag and why it’s my favorite travel companion on our Travel Tales and Tips: YOUR Japan Travel Adventures Episode.
What I Don’t Love:
While I love just about everything about The Away Bag, there are a couple of minor drawbacks. The hard shell, while protective, can scuff over time, especially after multiple trips. It’s also a bit pricier than standard luggage, but with the durability, design, and convenience it offers, it’s a solid investment for frequent travelers. Overall, it’s an essential piece for anyone who wants a reliable, stylish, and well-thought-out bag.

Joe's Pick – What I Love:
The GRAYL GeoPress 24 oz Water Purifier Bottle is a travel essential for anyone who loves hiking, camping, or exploring off the beaten path. This purifier bottle is a game-changer, allowing you to turn nearly any freshwater source into safe drinking water in just seconds. It removes bacteria, viruses, and even particulates, making it perfect for travel in remote areas or international destinations where water quality might be a concern. What I love most is the simplicity—just fill, press, and drink. It’s compact, lightweight, and easy to use, so you don’t have to lug around bulky filters or worry about stocking up on bottled water. It’s great for the environment too, helping you reduce single-use plastic waste while staying hydrated.
You can hear us talk about how the GRAYL GeoPress has saved me on my travels in our Adventurer Ann Explore's Ireland's Unbeaten Path episode here.
What I Didn’t Love:
While the GRAYL GeoPress is fantastic for purifying water, it does take a bit of effort to press the water through the filter, which might be challenging if you’re in a hurry or have limited upper body strength. Additionally, the filter needs regular replacing depending on usage, which can add to the overall cost. However, the convenience, peace of mind, and ability to access clean water anywhere make it a worthwhile investment for adventurous travelers and eco-conscious explorers alike.

Crystal’s Pick – What I Love:
A travel universal adapter with a built-in surge protector is an absolute lifesaver for international trips! This compact device lets you plug in your electronics no matter where you are, thanks to its versatile design that supports multiple plug types. The surge protector is a key feature, offering peace of mind that your devices won’t get fried by unexpected power surges—a common issue in some countries. It’s lightweight, easy to pack, and often includes multiple USB ports, so you can charge your phone, laptop, and other devices simultaneously without needing extra adapters. Whether I’m in Europe, Asia, or South America, this adapter ensures I’m always powered up and ready to go!
You can hear us talk about why a travel universal adapter is a must-have for every traveler in our From Luxury Tours to Local Markets: YOUR Peru Adventures (SA013) episode here.
What I Don’t Love:
While this adapter is super handy, the compact size can make it a bit bulky on crowded outlet spaces, especially if you’re sharing with other travelers. Also, while it’s great for charging devices, it’s not designed for high-wattage appliances like hair dryers or irons, so you’ll need a separate solution for those. Despite these minor drawbacks, the versatility, safety features, and convenience make it an essential addition to any travel bag.

Joe’s Pick – What I Love:
A wine aerator and decanter is the perfect travel accessory for wine lovers who want to elevate their experience, even on the go. This small but mighty gadget transforms your wine instantly, enhancing the flavor and aroma by allowing it to breathe properly—no long wait required! Whether you’re picnicking in wine country, enjoying a cozy night in your Airbnb, or hosting a small gathering while traveling, this tool ensures every glass tastes like it came from a top-tier winery. The best part? Many wine aerators are compact and lightweight, making them easy to slip into your bag or luggage without taking up too much space.
You can hear us talk about why a wine aerator and decanter is a must-pack for wine enthusiasts in our Uncorked Adventures: The Secrets of Wine Tours (with Chile Wine Trails’ Kyle Sherriff) episode here.
What I Don’t Love:
While a wine aerator and decanter works wonders, it does require a bit of careful handling—especially if it’s made of glass. Some models are also a bit more delicate, so you’ll want to ensure it’s packed securely if you’re bringing it on a trip. Additionally, it’s not an absolute necessity if you’re drinking casual table wine, but for special bottles, it’s a total game-changer. Despite these small considerations, the enhanced wine experience makes it a fantastic addition to any wine lover’s travel kit.

Travel-sized sprays are the ultimate multitaskers for staying fresh, focused, and germ-free on the go! From disinfectant sprays that keep hotel rooms and airplane trays clean, to essential oil sprays that calm your mind or energize your senses, these compact bottles pack a big punch. I also love having a shower spray for a quick refresh after a long day, focus sprays to stay sharp during travel planning, and even shoe sprays to keep odors at bay when I’ve been walking for miles. The best part? These sprays are TSA-friendly and fit neatly into a toiletry bag, so I always have exactly what I need, no matter where I’m headed.
You can hear us talk about my favorite travel-sized sprays and how they’ve saved the day on trips in our Are You Missing Out on Free Travel with The Points Mom episode here.
What I Don’t Love:
While these sprays are incredibly convenient, it can be easy to overpack and bring more than you really need, which takes up valuable space in your bag. Some sprays also have strong scents, so they might not be ideal for everyone around you in close quarters like planes or trains. That said, their versatility and ability to make travel more comfortable and hygienic make them an absolute must for my trips.

A vintage Pan Am T-shirt is the perfect blend of nostalgia and style for any travel enthusiast. This classic piece lets you channel the golden age of air travel, when flying was glamorous and adventurous. It’s super comfortable and versatile, making it an ideal travel companion—whether you’re lounging on a long-haul flight, exploring a new city, or just relaxing at your hotel. Plus, the iconic Pan Am logo sparks conversations with fellow travelers and aviation buffs who recognize the brand’s historic legacy. It’s not just a T-shirt; it’s a nod to the wanderlust-filled past of global travel.
You can hear us talk about why a vintage Pan Am T-shirt is a must-have for your travel wardrobe in our Christmas Markets on the Danube episode here.
What I Don’t Love:
While the vintage Pan Am T-shirt is stylish and comfy, it might not be as breathable as performance travel shirts for active days or outdoor adventures. That said, the charm, conversation-starting appeal, and timeless vibe make it a standout piece for any traveler who loves a touch of history in their wardrobe.

A collapsible lunch bag is the ultimate travel companion for anyone who likes to stay prepared with snacks or meals on the go. This lightweight and compact bag can expand to carry everything you need—whether it’s a picnic for the park, a packed lunch for a travel day, or snacks for a road trip. When you’re done, it folds down flat, saving precious space in your luggage or backpack. The insulated interior keeps food fresh, whether you need to keep it cool or warm, and it’s easy to clean in case of spills. I love the flexibility it offers, helping me avoid overpriced airport meals and stick to my travel budget!
You can hear us chat about how a collapsible lunch bag has saved me from hunger emergencies on the go in our Your 2025 Travel Budget Planner episode here.
What I Don’t Love:
While collapsible lunch bags are super convenient, they can sometimes lack the structure to keep heavier items from shifting around too much. And depending on the design, the insulation might not keep food cold for extended periods without an ice pack. Despite these minor drawbacks, the space-saving design and versatility make it a fantastic addition to any traveler’s packing list.

Crystal’s Pick – What I Love:
Exercise bands are a fantastic and travel-friendly way to stay active and strong while on the go. Whether you’re using bands with exercises printed on them or regular resistance bands paired with YouTube workouts, they’re perfect for fitting in a strength-training session without ever leaving your hotel room. I love how lightweight and compact they are—they take up virtually no space in your luggage but pack a big punch when it comes to versatility. From squats to arm workouts to core exercises, you can target almost every muscle group with just a single band. And since strength training is so good for maintaining your overall health and fitness, these bands help you stay on track no matter where you are.
You can hear us talk about why exercise bands are my go-to for strength training on the road in our Your Ireland Adventures Episode here.
What I Don’t Love:
While exercise bands are great for convenience, they don’t always provide the same level of resistance as gym equipment, so you might need to use multiple bands to challenge yourself. Also, if you’re not careful, they can snap or wear out over time, especially with frequent use. However, their portability, affordability, and ability to help you maintain a strength-training routine without leaving your room make them a must-have for fitness-focused travelers.

Joe’s Pick – What I Love:
A smartwatch is the ultimate travel companion that keeps me connected, organized, and on top of my fitness goals—all from my wrist. Whether I’m tracking my steps while exploring a new city, checking notifications without constantly pulling out my phone, or using GPS to navigate, this little device makes life so much easier on the go. Many smartwatches also include heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, and even contactless payment options, making them a perfect all-in-one gadget for travelers. Plus, features like weather updates and language translation apps come in handy when navigating different destinations. It’s like having a personal assistant, fitness tracker, and mini travel guide all in one sleek device!
You can hear us talk about why a smartwatch is an essential tool for modern travelers in our Romantic Getaways Episode here.
What I Don’t Love:
While smartwatches are incredibly useful, battery life can be a downside, especially on longer travel days when you don’t have easy access to a charger. Some models also require a phone nearby for full functionality, which might not always be ideal. And, of course, they can be pricey depending on the features you want. But despite these small drawbacks, the convenience, fitness tracking, and travel-friendly features make it a must-have for staying on top of everything while on the move.

Crystal’s Pick – What I Love:
A good neck pillow is a game-changer for long flights, road trips, and even train rides. It provides the support needed to rest comfortably without waking up with a stiff neck, making travel naps way more enjoyable. I love that there are so many options now—memory foam, inflatable, and even adjustable ones—so you can find the perfect fit for your comfort needs. Some even have built-in hoods or pockets to hold earbuds or sleep masks. Having a neck pillow means I can get some real rest while traveling, which makes a huge difference when arriving at my destination feeling refreshed instead of exhausted.
You can hear us talk about why a neck pillow is one of my go-to travel essentials in our Joe's Visit To Olympic National park episode here.
What I Don’t Love:
While a neck pillow is a must-have for comfort, it can be a bit of a hassle to carry around when you’re not using it. Some models take up more space than you’d like in your bag, and inflatable ones, while compact, don’t always provide the same level of support. Plus, finding the perfect one that balances softness and support can take some trial and error. That said, the ability to actually sleep on long journeys makes it worth the effort to find the right one!

Joe’s Pick – What I Love:
Smart wool clothing is one of the best investments you can make for hiking, outdoor adventures, and even everyday travel. Unlike regular wool, smart wool is designed to be breathable, moisture-wicking, and temperature-regulating, meaning it keeps you warm in the cold and cool in the heat. Plus, it naturally resists odors, so you can wear it multiple times without worrying about smelling like you’ve been on a multi-day trek. Whether it’s a base layer, socks, or a lightweight hoodie, smart wool is incredibly soft and comfortable—none of that itchy feeling you might associate with traditional wool. It’s the perfect blend of function and comfort for outdoor lovers and frequent travelers.
You can hear us talk about why smart wool is a must-have for travel and outdoor adventures in our Your National Park Adventures episode here.
What I Don’t Love:
The only downside to smart wool is that it can be pricey, but the durability and performance make it well worth the investment. Also, while it resists odors well, you still need to follow specific washing instructions to maintain its longevity. Some pieces might be a bit thinner than expected, so layering is key. But overall, for its comfort, versatility, and ability to keep you warm (or cool) in any condition, smart wool is a must-have for hiking, camping, and travel!

Crystal’s Pick – What I Love:
A good sleeping mask is an absolute must-have for better rest while traveling. Whether I’m on a long-haul flight, adjusting to a new time zone, or just trying to block out that annoying hotel hallway light, a comfortable sleeping mask makes all the difference. The best ones are lightweight, contoured to fit without pressing on your eyes, and completely block out light for deep, uninterrupted sleep. Some even have cooling features, built-in headphones, or adjustable straps for the perfect fit. I love how something so small can have such a big impact on feeling well-rested during a trip!
You can hear us talk about why a sleeping mask is a game-changer for better sleep while traveling in our Crystal's Thailand Adventure episode here.
What I Don’t Love:
While a good sleeping mask works wonders, finding the right one can be tricky—some are too tight, too loose, or let in light around the edges. If you’re not used to wearing one, it might take a little getting used to. Also, if you get one with extra features like Bluetooth audio, you’ll need to remember to charge it. But overall, the ability to sleep peacefully anywhere, anytime makes it a must-pack for any traveler!
